Before you install

Office 2019 runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11 only.
Remove any older or trial Office (such as the Microsoft 365 trial that comes with some new PCs): Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Microsoft Office → Uninstall, then restart. Two copies side by side cause confusing license messages.
Choose 64-bit unless you have an old add-in that needs 32-bit.
Have your 25-character key and an internet connection ready.

You can see whether your Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit in Settings → System → About → System type. If the normal uninstall hangs or leaves leftovers, Microsoft offers an official tool to remove Office completely called Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant.

Step 1: install Office 2019

There are two official ways, and the steps that come with your order say which one fits your key:

A) From your Microsoft account: if your key can be added to an account, go to setup.office.com, sign in with a Microsoft account, enter the key and pick a language. Office then appears in your account's services page; install it from the Install button and it activates when you sign in to Word.

B) With Microsoft's Office Deployment Tool: download it from Microsoft's official Download Center and run it to extract setup.exe into a folder. In the same folder create a file named configuration.xml containing this (for volume license keys):

Open a command prompt in that folder, run this command, and wait for the download and install to finish:

setup.exe /configure configuration.xml

Install Office using one of the methods above.
Open Word → File → Account.
Click "Change Product Key".
Paste the key, click Activate, then close and reopen Word.

If Word opens straight into the "Activate Office" wizard, choose to enter a product key and paste it there; the result is the same.

Step 2: check that Office is activated

In Word: File → Account should show "Product Activated" under Product Information.
Or run the command below in an admin command prompt and look for LICENSE STATUS: ---LICENSED---

cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus

If the command says the file was not found, your Office is 32-bit: change Program Files in the path to Program Files (x86).

Switching the interface language

If you installed more than one language (like the file above with Arabic and English), choose the menu language in File → Options → Language, set your preferred display language, then reopen the app. Proofing and typing languages are set on the same page.

Common problems

"We couldn't find a valid license": usually another copy of Office is installed. Remove every copy and reinstall.
The key is rejected at setup.office.com: some keys only activate inside Word. Use the Deployment Tool method and activate from File → Account.
Apps open in read-only mode: activation did not go through. Go back to Step 2 and check the status.
The key was already used: do not try keys from the internet. Contact us and we will sort it out under the activation warranty.

Office 2019 receives security updates from Microsoft like any other app, so keep automatic updates on.
