Windows 11 activation error codes and how to fix them

Got a strange code while activating Windows? Each code has a specific cause, and most take a minute to fix once you know what it means. Here are the common ones, most frequent first.

First: where to find the error code

  1. Open Settings with Win + I.
  2. Go to System → Activation. The code appears under the activation state and starts with 0x.
  3. Or use Command Prompt: run slmgr /dlv to see the license status and channel (Retail, OEM or Volume).

0xC004F050: "The product key you entered didn't work"

The most common one. Either the key was mistyped (letter O instead of zero, B instead of 8), or it is for a different edition than yours.

  • Copy and paste the key instead of typing it. If you ordered from us, the key is in "My library" ready to copy.
  • Check your edition in System → About: a Pro key activates Pro only, a Home key activates Home only. Exception: on Home with a Pro key, Windows upgrades to Pro with the same steps.
  • If your copy is Enterprise, LTSC or Education, a Pro key will not activate it. Install Pro or Home from Microsoft's site.

0xC004C003 and 0xC004C008: key rejected or already used

Both mean Microsoft's server rejected the key: it is either blocked or used on more devices than its limit. Retrying or changing settings will not help.

  • Contact whoever sold you the key, and do not try keys from the internet.
  • If the key is from us: take a screenshot of the error and message us; it is covered by our activation guarantee (replacement or refund if it does not work on first activation).
  • If 0xC004C003 appears right after upgrading from Windows 10, wait a day and retry: activation servers sometimes lag in registering the upgrade.

0xC004F213 and 0x803F7001: after a hardware change or clean install

These usually show up after replacing the motherboard, or after installing Windows on a PC that was never activated. Windows found no license tied to this device.

  1. If you have a key: go to **System → Activation → Change product key** and enter it. That is the direct fix.
  2. If Windows was activated before and linked to a Microsoft account: on the same page choose **Troubleshoot**, then "I changed hardware on this device recently", sign in and pick your device.
  3. If the key is OEM and the motherboard changed: activation usually does not come back, because OEM is tied to the first device. See [OEM vs Retail](/guides/windows-oem-vs-retail-key).

0x8007232B and 0xC004F074: copy set to KMS

These mean Windows is looking for a company activation server (KMS). It happens when the copy came from volume media, or someone ran a pirated activator on it before. Install your key manually:

Right-click Start, choose Terminal (Admin), and run in order (your key in place of X):

slmgr /upk
slmgr /cpky
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato

The first removes the old key, the second clears it from the registry, the third installs yours, and the fourth activates online.

If an unknown activator (KMS Activator and similar) was used on the PC, remove it and run an antivirus scan before activating; some plant malware and restore KMS settings after every update.

0x80072F8F and connection problems

  • Fix the date and time: Time & language → Date & time, turn on "Set time automatically". Activation uses an encrypted connection that rejects a wrong clock.
  • Turn off any VPN or proxy and try another network (such as a hotspot from your phone).
  • If a strict work firewall is in the way, try from home.

Still not working?

  • Restart and try again in an hour; activation servers sometimes have temporary issues.
  • Run a system file check in Terminal (Admin): sfc /scannow, restart when it finishes, then retry.
  • Full activation steps from the start are in activating Windows 11.
